By the 1890s, this was an area where the occassional mansion with gardens
belonging to famous wealthy foreigners, Ottoman pashas, high-ranking state
officials and the intellectuals of the period were located. Later on, blocks of
appartments flats went up after the electric tramway line started opperations in
1913. The district which had been generally zoned as a residential housing area
up until the 1970s has since been transformed into one with rich shopping mall,
distinctive shops and boutiques. Todays district of Sisli is a thriving center
of business, commercial activities and entertainment.
Ever since it was founded, Sisli has been a settlement area prefered by the
wealthy, foreigners and minorities, and is one of the few districts in Istanbul
where non-Moslems minorities choose to live.
